Discuss - Problems uploading images

Post a reply

Hi,

I just uploaded five images, and got prompted multiple times for the descriptions, got items displaying multiple times, and all sorts of wierd stuff.

When I eventually made it through the process of entering descriptions I found that I had to delete a whole lot of images because there were multiples of most of them in 'Your Media'.

Also, all of the javascript stuff is annoying. From my point of view the Mediawiki upload process is nicer, because it uses the Firefox file selection dialog which actually displays the image back to me (firefox 3) rather than the one the Javascript presents, which means I have to go to a different application to see what image that file is.

The mediawiki upload page is worth copying, also, for the way it handles categorisation prompting, and handles all of the data input *before* I upload the image. It's really annoying to go through a whole bunch of pages to do the upload when all of the questions could be asked on a single page, and the upload happen as a single action.

Andrew McMillan (Karora).

Further to that, I tried again, this time with only two items, and I was prompted for the information for the first item twice, the second item once.

I am pretty sure that in the earlier case I was prompted for the first item five times, the second four, the third three, the fourth twice, and the fifth just the once.

Peculiar behaviour, but one can imagine it being just like a computer to get it wrong in that sort of way.

And to confirm that when I upload three images, I get prompted for the details 3 times + 2 times + once.

While I'm suggesting enhancements, to improve the flow of uploading images...

It would be nice not to have to wait for the menu bar to scroll across each page.

For some reason firefox three seems entirely non-responsive from when I click upload, until it's completed. If I'm uploading 5 photos this can easily be 15MB and it would be nice to be able to switch to another tab while I was waiting the 30 seconds or so.

It would be nice if I could set the defaults for 'yes, I license this thing' on my settings page, so I don't have to click those checkboxes *every* *%$%&^%* *time*.

And just to reiterate how nice it would be to have the 'enter the details' on the same page as the 'browse your hard disk for the image'. Particularly if that page was able to be bookmarked (as the page containing the 'Add' button currently is.

Andrew McMillan.

Just trying to clarify what you are seeing. The process is...
1. You use the flash file uploader to select 3 images
2. The 3 images are shown in the uploader and when you press the upload button they get uploaded to the site.
3. You are then taken to a page where you are asked to add some info.

At step are, are you saying there are 6 images on that page?

I don't believe I see a flash file uploader at all, or maybe it is. I see an "Add" button, and each time I click on it I get to select files (but it doesn't use the standard Firefox file selection dialog, because the image is not displayed). The image is then added to a list, and the 'Add' button moves down, so I click it again, add another image and so on.

Then when I have chosen all of the images in this way, I click 'Upload' and my web browser goes totally non-responsive for however long it takes, like something single-threaded is happening. Perhaps this is FLash, because it's not normal and I'm pretty sure Javascript operation *doesn't* block other browsing activities like that.

Then, in a very subtle change that I often don't notice exactly when it happens, the x's change to ticks and the 'Upload' changes to 'Next' (it would be nicer if something more obvious happened... I mean, why do I have to click 'Next' anyway? It seems the computer must know that I want the next screen, which has all of this information and more, and should take me straight there).

If I have uploaded 5 images, then when I click 'Next' I get several pages full of prompts for information about 15 images, which are 5 of the first, 4 of the second, 3 of the third, 2 of the second and 1 of the last one.

I have been entering the information only for one set of those images, and then just going to 'Your Media' and going into each duplicate and deleting it.

My browser is:
Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-GB; rv:1.9) Gecko/2008052912 Firefox/3.0

My Flash version is:
9.0 r124

Cheers,
Andrew McMillan.

I tried turning off javascript for the site (using the NoScript firefox plugin) but then nothing works, especially it seems that the top menu bar doesn't work, and when I go to the page to select an upload type it doesn't pass the type to the next page. If I use my bookmark to get to the upload image page, the 'Add' button does nothing, etc.

It seems a lot faster though, not having to wait for the menus & logo to scroll in, for every page. It would be nice if it worked without the javascript / flash. I suppose you don't have to worry much about visually challenged people using *this* site, though :-)

Cheers,
Andrew McMillan.

Thanks for the extra info. I have just tried exactly what you describe and I don't get multiple versions of each image. I'll get the web guys to have a look.

It's certainly repeatable for me - I just did it again, with only two images on this occasion. I haven't deleted the duplicate of the first one I uploaded this time.

Perhaps it is dependent on the browser version or flash version I am running. I'll try with the Webkit version of Epiphany and see if I see the same problem.

Hmm... Well that didn't go very well at all. Using the Webkit version of Epiphany I just get 'An error has occurred during your upload and an engineer has been notified'.

I will make sure Henry or one of the web guys has another look at this. Thanks.

happening for me too -- in Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.8.1.16) Gecko/20080715 Ubuntu/7.10 (gutsy) Firefox/2.0.0.16

Image ends up in my media multiple times.

There is now a post saying that Linux uploading isn't working. Both of the cases reported here are Linux browsers. The other post says that a fix is being worked upon.
