Description
This image helped publicise Focus in New Zealand, an event organised by Brake and others to launch the New Zealand Centre for Photography in 1985. Brake had long called for such a centre, but the response from the photographic community was mixed. Some felt that it could end up promoting Brake’s own reputation as much as photography itself. And although Brake went to some lengths to be inclusive, many also felt that the Centre would primarily support the sorts of photography Brake favoured. This tended to exclude what became known as contemporary (art) photography. As at 2010, the Centre was in recess.
